Important notes to consider when selecting pool and sauna lights :

Pool lights are manufactured in two types: surface-mounted and flush-mounted.

Nowadays, many designers and employers use pool lights and beautiful lighting to decorate pool environments and attract the attention of visitors and customers especially at nights.

Pool lights are usually of LED, SMD, and Halogen types.

Halogen pool lights are single-colored, while LED and SMD pool lights are offered in both single- and multi-color (14 colors) types.

As their advantage over Halogen lights, LED and SMD lights generate a lower amount of heat, which allows them to continue working in empty pools without experiencing any damage. Moreover, they have a longer lifespan compared to Halogen lights and are offered in diverse colors.

pool lights

Generally, LED and SMD lights have a lower thickness, are installed more easily, and offer a better sealing. Despite their advantages, the LED and SMD lights are more expensive compared to the Halogen lights. Moreover, in case of a burn out the connected wires should be changed in addition to the lightbulb itself.

Halogen pool lights

Compared to LED lights, the Halogen lights generate a considerably greater amount of heat, which is absorbed by the pool water. In case the pool water level is drops such that the Halogen lights are exposed to air, the generated heat is sufficiently high to deform the lightbulb and its frame. In case of contact with swimmers’ bodies, the Halogen light can cause skin burning.

Installing Halogen pool lights at a depth of 50 cm or more protects them from being exposed to air in case some of the water is vapored or the water is siphoned (which is done to reduce the TDS of pool water). Exposed lights considerably increase the risk of harming the swimmers or damaging the pool lights. The light spacing depends on their lux level and its minimum value is 3 m.

The illumination installations inside the pool basin (i.e. the pool lights) are cooled by the pool water. Therefore, all the underwater installations should be installed 50 cm below the water surface, except in the designs intentionally devising smaller depths for the installations.

pool lights

Pool lights, illumination installations, and pool speakers are generally designed and manufactured based on voltage levels of 24 V and 12 V to ensure the safety of users.

The illumination and electrical installations of swimming pools, decorative pools, hot tubs, dry and steam saunas are highly likely to cause electric shocks and other harms due to the high conductivity of water and the humid nature of pool environments. Therefore, the 220 AC grid power is never used for interior illumination of pools and, alternatively, 12 V or 24 V Halogen and/or LED lights are used.

Compared to a dry ground or/body, the effect of electric shock is considerably greater on individuals whose bodies are partly or entirely in water. Swimmers are far more vulnerable against electric shocks due to the humidity of pool environments. This causes their body to have a considerably lower electrical resistance, which provides a suitable electrical path connecting

The following methods can be used to protect the swimmers against electric shocks :

  • Employing low-voltage electric equipment (12 to 24 V)
  • Equipping electric circuits with fault relays
  • Proper and careful insulation according to the standards
  • Interlocking the metal components (pool ladder, diving board, pool lights, etc.) to have zero potential difference and separate the equipment and electric circuits.
  • Observing the allowed distances between some equipment and electric paths near the pools

Note :

  • The minimum aerial cables located within the outdoor pool area should be 6 meters from the pool basin from all 6 direction.
  • The minimum distance between the underground cables (buried cables) and the pool basin should be 2 meters (both indoor and outdoor pools).
  • The minimum distance of outlets and switches from the basin should be 4 to 5 meters.
