Pool Dehumidifier Selection Tips :

A dehumidifier, as the name suggests, serves to absorb and remove unwanted moisture from an area or a product.

Moisture is a notable corrosive agent in humid environments such as indoor pools that are saturated by the constant vaporization of water from the pool or hot tub surface. Therefore, pool dehumidifiers are produced with various capacities, and with or without a heating coil.

Overall, air dehumidification is possible by three methods :

  • Desiccant dehumidification;
  • Thermal condensation dehumidification (mechanical & thermo-mechanical dehumidification systems);
  • Air ionization dehumidification (electric dehumidifier).

Under what conditions is it necessary to use the pool humidifier?

  • In pools where an exchange or the steady and sufficient conditioning of the air to reduce the excess humidity is not possible, or in cases where the outside air is also highly-humid (above 50%) and air exchange cannot reduce the humidity of the indoor pool (such as the northern or southern regions of Iran), employing a pool dehumidifier system is in order.
  • In general, if the relative humidity in the swimming pool space drops below 40% (RH%) at 25 °C, swimmers feel cold (though it must be noted that, based on the type of use, the air temperature in indoor swimming pools must be kept between 25 to 29 °C).
  • On the other hand, a humidity of over 60% is by no means convenient as it not only makes breathing uncomfortable for the swimmers, but can also be destructive to the pool building and equipment (in particular, electrical and mechanical devices).
  • In general, water evaporates when the difference between the temperature of the pool or spa with the surrounding indoor environment exceeds 2–3 °C.<
  • Pool dehumidifiers can be classified into two groups, namely those with a heating coil (to warm up the output air) and those without one.

Mechanical Refrigeration Pool Dehumidifier :

  • One application of mechanical dehumidification systems is in indoor swimming pools. The principal advantage of these systems is that the latent and sensible heats, as well as the heat generated by the compressor, can be used in another part of the system that requires thermal energy.
  • The thermodynamic cycles used in cooling-coil-based air conditioning or dehumidification systems are also commonly used for dehumidification. In this method, the humid air passes over the cooling coil of the air supplier or the direct expansion coil which condenses and removes the moisture.
  • Pool dehumidifiers operate on electricity and comprise a packaged compressor, condenser, and evaporator and can be fine-tuned according to the relative humidity, the ambient temperature, and the size of the room. The device dehumidifies the environment, transforming the moisture into distilled water that is drained out of the system.
  • The dehumidifier sucks in the humid air and lets out dry air at a higher temperature (in the case of being equipped with a heating coil) or the same temperature as the room (in the case of a device without a heating coil).

The pool dehumidifier must offer the following features :

  • Moisture-resistant, stainless casing;
  • Adjustments for the relative ambient humidity;
  • Automatic and manual operation;
  • Low-noise;
  • No need for canalizing.

Electrical Dehumidifier :

With no mechanical, moving parts, electric dehumidifiers have a simplistic design as they operate by a cold surface to condense the water vapor in the air.

Despite being noise-free and low-cost relative to other methods, these devices are often manufactured for small-scale operation due to their low efficiency.

Absorbent–Drier Dehumidifier :

It must be noted that desiccants such as silicates have a tendency to absorb moisture and are often used in refrigerated warehouses. After absorbing moisture, the saturated salts must be regenerated to be used again. Regeneration of desiccants can be done using porous media or heating.

Furthermore, another dehumidification method with industrial and agricultural applications is to use a honeycomb desiccant wheel, which is a dehumidification tool with a silica-gel-coated surface absorbing the moisture when placed against the airflow.Driven by an electric motor, the wheel—which is fabricated from desiccant sheets of various thicknesses—rotates, passing the humid air through its silica-gel-covered pores, desiccating the air.
