The gravitational (natural) flow of water in vertical tubes of the heating/cooling systems is one of the primary determinants of the required head or pressure for the circulator pump, that is, the only task of circulator pumps used in circulating systems is to compensate for the friction pressure drop along the tubes, taps, joints, and coils of the heating/cooling system. Therefore, the required head of these pumps is usually substantially lower than the head required for the water supply pump of the same place, hence allowing the use of low-power electropumps.

  • By using reverse piping in a small or medium building, the required power for the circulator pump is minimized and water is uniformly distributed in pipes of the heating or cooling system.
  • When calculating the pump head for cooling towers, although part of the water path is open, the gravitational flow in the return of water to the condenser allows using the same method used for circulator pump heads.

Circulator pumps are usually installed on the return water path of the circuit of the cooling or heating systems. In other words, they are placed before the central heating boiler in heating systems and before the chiller in cooling systems, so that the water outlet of circulator pumps in cooling systems is entered into the boiler and then distributed in radiators and fan-coils. While the water outlet of circulator pumps in cooling systems is first entered into the evaporator of chiller and then it goes into the fan-coils and coil of the air handling units. In order to return the unused hot water consumption to the hot-water plumbing of the building, it is essential to install water return pump before the coil or double-glazed resource on the hot-water return pipe.
