Are Air Purifiers Really Capable of Cleaning the Air?
Pollution and particulates are parts of our modern daily life in urban areas, with alarming statistics voiced as regards the consequent risks. In times of critical air pollution solutions including closing schools, imposing traffic plans, closing polluting factories, or decommissioning older vehicles may help as a temporary remedy but are futile as a cure for air pollution in large cities and its hazards for the public, in particular, children and the elderly.
Using air purifiers is one method of fighting air pollution, but it may raise questions for many. For example, is the home air purifier effective, and does it benefit one's health in areas with high air pollution? Does an air purifier guarantee clean air at home? Does the device remove any dust? Do people with allergies need air purifiers? Does the air purifier eliminate all odours?
Luckily, a wide range of air purifiers are available on the market, from small, portable ones used in vehicles and small rooms to larger ones for households, offices, and public spaces.
It is said that the air purifier offers many benefits to babies and those who suffer from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases as it removes all viruses and bacteria from the environment, is that true?
It must be noted that the filters used in air purifiers are effective in eliminating particulates, dust, and smoke from the air. The filters are available in various types, each offering a particular task.
For example, the pre-filter is efficient in absorbing such particulates as lint from carpets and curtains, animal hair, and dust. Further, relying on nanotechnology, the plasma filter serves to remove allergens and soot, the activated carbon filter eliminates odours and toxic gases (cigarette smoke and carbon monoxide), the HEPA filter removes 99% of all particulates and allergens as small as 0.1 microns, and harmful pollutants such as viruses, bacteria, pollen, animal hair and feather, and the UV lamp eradicates viruses (swine flu) and aerobic bacteria, sterilizing the output air (please note that the filters must be replaced regularly).
Air purifiers are available in various sizes and levels and have different capacities based on their dimensions. Therefore, by selecting the right air purifier and taking good care of it, paying attention to the filter replacement indicator, air quality display, and the timer, integrated into most air purifiers, the device can be effective in clearing most of the air pollution.
Unfortunately, misconceptions about the function of air purifiers undermine the capabilities and the effectiveness of these devices, giving way to ambiguities. For example, the air purifier removes the dust but one must be careful not to expect a vacuum cleaner that cleans the dust off all household appliances.
- Many overlook cleaning the household after purchasing an air purifier for the device eliminates unpleasant odours, which is inherently wrong. Air purifiers are equipped with different filters that can eliminate odours resulting from heavy carbon particles for the device to offer the best performance it is best to remove the source of the bad smell.
- The belief that the air purifier needs to be constantly on is also a misconception. It is necessary that, every once in a while, the windows are cracked open to let in some fresh air. If the outside air is not too polluted, once a day, switch the device off and open the window for one hour to refresh the air in the room.
- Some users, believing that the air purifie functions the same at all speeds, set it at low speed. But one must note that any air purifier has a set capacity, referred to as air change rate. The air change rate, often expressed in cubic meters per hour (m3/h), changes with fan speed. It can be said with certainty that low working speed makes the device ineffective in large spaces as it fails to reach far distances at low fan speed and static pressure.
Paying extra attention, one can realize the capacity and capabilities of the air purifier in cleaning the air in households and offices, even in polluted urban areas.
